The district of Antofagasta de la Sierra is the largest and less populated in Catamarca.
It is from the economic and geographic point of view part of the Puna of Atacama and due to its climate it belongs to the high desert lands. The population of Antofagasta de La Sierra is located at 3,365 km above the sea level and it is on the provincial route nº 43, at 557 km from the city of Catamarca.
It has 1,000 inhabitants who breed cattle, from which they get wool and leather which allows the development of a hand made textile industry.
There are important archeological mines which date back from thousand of years old and some which belong to the Inca and pre-Inca Cultures: La Alumbrera, El Coypar and El Coyparcito.
There are plenty of volcanoes of different highs, among them the Galan of 6,600 m. The region has lakes and salt lands.
The fauna is made up of llamas, vicuñas, rodents and many kind of birds. There are mines of marbles, onyx, borax and lithium.
