It was founded in 1876, for the national and provincial governments' disposition, with the name of Villa Libertad.

Their purpose was to enable an agricultural center for the most part with immigrants Italian. It is one of the cities that has experienced bigger growth between 1980 and 1990 in the county, thanks to the big possibilities that it presents the region for the industry of the wood, citric and their derived, rice and oils.

As center of services, it is a convenient scale for the travelers that go for the RN14 toward the waterfalls of the Iguazú, in the county of Missions, or for Paso de los Libres ones toward the Brazilian beaches.
