The city was founded by the Nicaraguan Tomás de Rocamora who was sent by the Spanish Viceroy in 1783. It was called San José de Gualeguaychú.

It is placed in the southeast area of the province. Its name was originated by the Yaguarí Guazú River, that in Guaraní means River of the Big Jaguar. The city has 65.000 inhabitants.

Its relief is characterized by low hills, the climate is "pampeano" template with an average temperature of about 18º C.

One of the main attractions of the county is the carnival that every summer is developed. The city also has an appropriate hotel infrastructure, accompanied by a casino that even receives visitors from the near provinces.

On the other hand it possesses a very important industrial park, transforming it into a strong city and open to new investments.
